Bon Appétit is looking for a full-time editor and writer to join dedicated, hard-working, food-obsessed team. The ideal candidate must be a strong writer and editor who is able to pitch and produce dynamic content, see stories through from ideation to publish on print and digital, and help other editors create stories across platforms. This person will be an integral part of the edit team across our print and digital platforms, with an emphasis on reporting and editing content related to the restaurant industry and how it relates to trends and the world around us.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee restaurant coverage for Bon Appétit across print and digital
  • Generate story ideas for restaurant stories and packages, and for other stories across the BA network
  • Assign, write, and edit articles and packages that span a range including interviews, profiles, explainers, reported features, recipe stories, news, and special projects/packages
  • Conceptualize how stories and recipes might live across all editorial facets of the brand (digital, print, social, podcast, video, etc)
  • Edit newsletters and contribute across BA platforms and social channels as necessary
  • Participate in podcast, video, events, and other cross-brand initiatives as necessary


Requirements:

  • 3-5 years experience reporting and editing, ideally in journalism, writing, or related fields
  • Strong demonstrated knowledge of restaurant industry; 1-2 years experience writing about restaurants preferred
  • Sound editorial judgment; stellar writing and editing skills
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to adhere to tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate well with people across departments (Art, Social, Test Kitchen), and at all levels of brand
  • Professional proficiency in Spanish a plus

Bon Appétit is Looking for Deputy Food Editor

The Bon Appétit Food Department is responsible for creating dozens of compelling and original recipes each month for our print magazine and digital platforms.Bon Appétit content showcases the myriad perspectives of the editors and contributors, and Food Editors take a central role in showcasing recipes in video, podcasts, and experiential events.

The Deputy Food Editor is the right hand of the Test Kitchen Director, overseeing Assistant and Associate-level Food Editors, and maintaining a strong presence in the Test Kitchen to oversee the quality and output of our recipe content. They will provide direct guidance and support to junior editors, while also contributing recipes and other content of their own. They are also a vital link in coordinating recipe content across all platforms. Strong candidates will have related experience managing staff in food-related media, with a deep knowledge of food, culinary technique, and recipe development.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage 4 direct reports (3 Associate Food Editors and 1 Assistant Food Editor)
  • Provide guidance and mentorship for new and existing test kitchen hires, from recipe troubleshooting to lineup generation and story development
  • Coordinate ideation and lineup approval for all digital recipe content across Bon Appétit and Epicurious
  • Track all recipe deliverables for digital platforms, working closely with Test Kitchen Director to align with Print content.
  • Top-edit all new and updated digital recipe content
  • Pitch recipes and stories for print and digital, and develop original recipes and content
  • Take part in video, audio, and experiential initiatives


Desired Qualifications:

  • Four years experience in food editorial
  • Experience building and leading teams
  • Interest in and ability to work within a collaborative, cross-team environment
  • On-camera interest and experience a plus

Bon Appétit Is Hiring Food Editor

The Bon Appétit test kitchen is responsible for creating dozens of compelling and original recipes each month for our print magazine and digital platforms. Bon Appétit’s recipe content is completely interwoven with our editorial mission and the perspective of our editors, photo, and art teams. Story ideas are generated by staff members and outside contributors, and the test kitchen is tasked with realizing those ideas in recipe form. A Food Editor is responsible for generating all types of recipe content and being comfortable with all stages of the content production cycle, from pitching, to recipe development, cross-testing, and working with our visual and photo teams.

Food Editors work on a combination of print and digital recipe content, but may contribute in other areas as well, such as writing, promoting their work on social media platforms, in video, and through events. This position requires an ability to translate current restaurant and culinary trends into actionable recipes geared towards home cooks. It also requires the ability to collaborate with outside recipe developers and chefs, and help turn others’ culinary vision into reality. Strong candidates are creative, passionate about food and cooking, and great with deadlines. They should possess a strong editorial voice alongside their culinary skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Contribute recipe and general content ideas at print and digital ideas meetings
  • Pitch, develop, and test recipes for print and digital
  • Track deliverables for Print recipes, communicate deadlines, and organize photo reference reviews
  • Test, rewrite, and troubleshoot recipes contributed by chefs and outside recipe developers
  • Contribute to social media, video, podcast, and press/media opportunities on occasion
  • Edit and write recipes in accordance with Bon Appétit house language style; read and review story proofs during shipping weeks
  • Contribute written elements, such as sidebars or callouts, when needed
  • Brainstorm, collaborate, and help solve challenges with the rest of the food team, regardless of story assignment

Desired Skills & Qualifications:
  • 3+ years experience in culinary field, including restaurants
  • At least 1 year experience in food editorial
  • On-camera interest and experience a plus
