Blavity News is looking for a skilled Weekend Editor
This position will be responsible for assigning, editing, publishing, and sharing articles to social media. This position partners closely with the Blavity News editorial team. The ideal candidate has three or more years of editing experience, is knowledgeable of and has a passion for Black culture, has a knack for headline-framing, an ability to write with empathy, and is comfortable working independently. The Weekend Editor is expected to review articles for clarity, structure, word choice, accuracy, and alignment with AP Style.
This role will report directly into the Assistant Managing Editor, Blavity News.
ResponsibilitiesÂ
- Assign and edit three news articles per dayÂ
- Review stories for context, accuracy, and grammarÂ
- Provide feedback to the Weekend Writer on errors and areas of improvementÂ
- Help source and flag news stories for coverage consideration
Qualifications
- Education: Preferred BA/BS in Journalism, or relevant work experience
- Experience: 3 or more years of experience with editing and/or fact-checking for a digital news publication
- Technologies: Fluent in content management systems, social media, and Google Suite
- Experience editing news stories on tight deadlinesÂ
- Ability to edit long and short-form articlesÂ
- High-energy, company-first, positive attitude; must be motivated to work hard in a fast-paced environmentÂ
- A healthy appreciation of Black culture
Details: Candidates will be expected to be available Saturday and Sunday from 10AM-2PM EST, ensuring stories are edited, published, and shared to social media in real-time. Â

Writer at Blavity News
This position is responsible for sourcing, writing, and reporting on stories that affect and reflect the Black community; including politics, pop culture, and trending news. In collaboration with the Blavity News Editorial Team, this position involves identifying and writing news stories, conducting research, interviewing sources, and reviewing viral trends. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast paced environment, is open-minded, persistent, quick and effective at reporting, and is an excellent storyteller.Â
This position is a 1099 contract and will be overseen by the Editor-in-Chief, Blavity News.Â
Responsibilities:
- Write up to four news stories per shiftÂ
- Source relevant news stories and stay abreast of viral trends on social media worth covering
- Curate questions to interview sources
- Pitch original long-form content twice a month
- Diligently flag and file stores
- Attend bi-weekly writers' callsÂ
Qualifications:
- Education: Preferred BA/BS in journalism or relevant work experience
- Experience: 1-3 years of experience writing and reporting for a digital news publication

The position ensures all Blavity News content is produced accurately, and aligns with our editorial style guide. Partnering in close collaboration with the News writing team, this position reviews and edits all news stories produced by the team; ensuring factual accuracy, proper tone, voice, and context, and correcting errors and grammatical mistakes. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, has refined writing skills, stellar research skills, an understanding of user experience, and has the ability to write with empathy.Â
This 1099 Contract position reports directly into the Assistant Managing Editor, Blavity News.Â

Details: This position is a 1099 Contract, which averages up to 35 hours per week for up to 6 months. Candidates will be expected to be available from 10AM-5PM EST, ensuring stories are edited in real-time.  Â
