Freelance Opportunities for Freelancers Like Me - Dec 30, 2024 Edition

At the end of the year, so many journalists are grappling with uncertainty, this last week of the year post feels especially urgent. Freelancers across the industry are feeling the weight of financial instability, with many of us worried about finding consistent work, keeping our careers afloat, and simply paying our bills next month. I know firsthand how scared January can feel.

That's why before we end 2024 this week's newsletter of freelance opportunities is more than just a list—it's a resource of hope. These leads could be the lifeline that sustains a freelancer for another month. It’s a reminder that opportunities do exist, and with a little persistence and community support, we can find work that both fulfills and sustains us.

Condé Nast

Condé Nast Traveler is looking for freelance travel writers with experience with Punta Cana or Puerto Vallarta hotels ($.50/word)

MIT Technology Review welcomes pitches from freelance writers across a broad range of topics. We encourage writers of all skill levels, and from all backgrounds, to pitch us. We are especially interested in hearing from writers with backgrounds that are traditionally under-represented in technology and science journalism, and from outside the United States.

This guide will give you a brief overview of the kinds of stories we run, what we’re looking for in a pitch, and who to contact when you have an idea.

Most of the stories that MIT Technology Review commissions come from pitches, but we do reach out to writers with assignments. We also issue a bi-monthly call for pitches for the print magazine. If you’d like to be considered for assignments and be informed of calls for pitches, you can fill out this form to be added to our database of freelance journalists.

We believe that the best indication of what we are looking for can be found in back issues of the magazine itself. It’s important to be familiar with our magazine, its content, architecture, audience and tone before pitching. Always send us your ideas in writing. You can email your query to editor@canadiangeographic.ca.

CALL FOR WRITERS! ✍🏼

I'm hoping to add a few new freelance writers to our bench at Utah Business before the end of the year. We're seeking talented writers who are curious about Utah's business landscape and ready to tell compelling stories about our state's most innovative companies and leaders.

What we offer:
• A rate of $0.40/word
• Bylined articles for your portfolio
• Opportunities to cover Utah's dynamic business scene
• Editorial mentorship and support

Business writing experience is a plus, but we value strong writing skills above all. If you're a skilled storyteller eager to learn business journalism, we'll provide the guidance you need. Utah-based writers are strongly preferred.
