Frankie Beverly Graces Cover of ESSENCE's ESSENCE Festival of Culture 30th Anniversary Issue

The music of Maze featuring Frankie Beverly is the soundtrack of warm dusks spent cruising local side streets, with the windows down and the speakers turned on high. Beverly’s voice conjures memories of late afternoons seated in a sunny corner of the extended family’s spacious backyard, eavesdropping on “grown-folks business” being discussed at the cooler while the aroma of an active grill fills the air. The group’s songs trigger muscle memory of the electric slide on freshly cut grass, Soul Train lines in the living room, and slow dances under the stars.

So it’s no surprise that the legendary performer is returning to the pinnacle of summer, the ESSENCE Festival of Culture, for our 30th anniversary. He will be receiving his flowers as a legacy entertainer and, for one last time, commanding the very stage he helped build from its inception.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone Graces Cover of Women's Health’s Olympics Issue

Raised in the small town of Dunellen, New Jersey, Sydney is one of four children born to Willie and Mary McLaughlin, both former track athletes. Despite their running backgrounds, neither parent pressured their children to follow in their footsteps. “Number one for them was just getting us active,” Sydney says. “There was also the social aspect of it, being able to play on teams and make friends.”

Young Sydney participated in all kinds of sports—basketball, soccer, softball, dance—but from an early age, she was mesmerized by track and field. The first Olympics she watched were the 2008 Beijing Games, when she was just 8, and Sydney specifically recalls tuning in to the 4x400 meter women’s relay featuring future Team USA teammate Allyson Felix.

Noah Lyles Graces Cover of TIME Magazine's July Issue

The Paris Olympics, which begin on July 26, are set to go down as the Noah Lyles Games. If Lyles, 26, repeats his Budapest feats and wins the 100-m, 200-m, and 4 × 100-m relay golds, he’ll be the first American track-and-field athlete since Carl Lewis, 40 years ago, to win that triple, and the first male athlete to do so since Usain Bolt in 2016. Now Bolt is no longer in the starting blocks, and Michael Phelps is out of the water. Katie Ledecky is in the pool but a more low-key presence, and everyone already knows Simone Biles is a legend. The stage appears set for the World’s Fastest Man, the title Lyles took with his 100-m win at worlds, to steal the show. He’s even made noise about chasing a fourth gold, in the 4 × 400-m relay. No male track athlete has ever won that many sprint golds at a Games. (Americans Carl Lewis, Jesse Owens, and Alvin Kraenzlein each won a fourth, but in the long jump.)

More than a decade ago, Roach started his career in his Chicago hometown, where he grew up the eldest of five siblings, learning early on to do anything necessary to survive. His love for fashion began by shopping at thrift stores, which turned into selling vintage out of his car’s trunk before the hustle grew into the Deliciously Vintage shop. Once Kanye visited the store in 2009, it became a destination for celebrities and insiders to discover vintage designer gems.

GloRilla Graces Cover of Vibe Magazine's July Issue

Her usual bubbly spirit was muted to say the least, with her team letting us know that she was in the studio until 5:00 a.m. that morning, tightening up tracks for what will become her first studio album. This was a key studio session, as Glo was set to hit the road the very next day for her first Hot Girl Summer tour date supporting Megan Thee Stallion. This is a time in her career when every second counts, and while her glam squad could remove all physical signs of the rapper burning candles at both ends, the intensity of her schedule was still apparent. I could also sense that she was feeling the weight of the moment. Glo knows she is on the brink of transitioning into a superstar, and while she has embraced this new frontier, it can take an emotional toll and present as uninterested or straight-up aloof to the new landscape one must navigate.
