What They’re Looking For: Original, underreported U.S. story ideas that go beyond the obvious angle. The editorial director is specifically inviting writers to pitch interesting stories that haven't received enough attention. The publication's reported rate is around $800 per piece.

AFAR IS SEEKING PITCHES FOR ITS SPRING 2027 ISSUE

About: AFAR is accepting pitches for its Spring 2027 print issue, with stories centered on immersive travel, people and place. The issue includes sections covering food, experiences, neighborhoods, behind the scenes and destination stories.
What They’re Looking For: Reported travel stories with a strong sense of place, including Feast, Senses of Place, One Great Block, Behind the Scenes, Workshop and Connect. Print assignments pay from $300 to $3,000, with many features starting at $1 per word.

About: Dialogue Earth is commissioning photo first stories about the human side of Africa's transition to solar energy, connecting technology with the people and communities experiencing the change.
What They’re Looking For: Reported visual stories that show how solar energy is changing everyday life in Africa. The assignment pays $1,800 for the completed package. Status: Pitch deadline is September 13, 2026.

SIXTY INCHES FROM CENTER IS SEEKING PITCHES FOR 2026

About: Sixty Inches From Center is a nonprofit arts publication and archive covering Chicago and the Midwest, with a focus on artists, cultural workers and underrepresented stories.

What They’re Looking For: Pitches about Midwest arts and culture outside Chicago, as well as stories on music, performance, sound, film and books, interviews with elders and oral histories, coverage of recently shuttered cultural spaces and platforms, bilingual stories and photo essays. The standard rate is $150 per article.

Status: Pitches are currently open for 2026.
