Men's Health Looking For New Deputy Editor

Men's Health is seeking a smart, enthusiastic deputy editor to shape content and steer coverage across all channels of the brand—with a strong emphasis on MensHealth.com. The ideal candidate combines an editing and management background with an affinity for breaking news, health and wellness trends, entertainment and pop culture, along with men’s lifestyle interests. A strategic mind-set and experience with hitting strategy goals is key. This person will be responsible for the quality and variety of digital content that is put up on the site each day, working closely with a team of editors, writers, and designers to maintain and enforce best practices and high standards. They should be an independent self-starter; thrive in a fast-paced environment; and be able to pivot in the rapidly changing landscape of digital journalism. This is a full-time position based in the Men’s Health offices in New York City, reporting to the executive editor.

Please note that for consideration, resumes must be submitted in .pdf format with a cover letter, salary requirements, and a link to a portfolio of work.

What you’ll do:

  • Optimize the quality and variety of content that is put up on the site each day
  • Collaborate with assigning editors to ensure that they are finding the best possible angles and packaging for any given story

  • Surface compelling, untold stories and respond nimbly to cultural conversations with stories that will generate buzz
  • Seek, manage, and grow relationships with both established writers and up-and-coming voices
  • Brainstorm large-scale projects (site, social, and video-based) that reach new audiences, engage loyal ones, and make waves in the industry
  • Lead the staff in the absence of the editor in chief and/or executive editor
  • Work with data and analytics to help the executive editor determine site strategy

Who you are:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience editing or writing in journalism, publishing, creative services, and/or content creation
  • Background in news coverage, health and wellness, entertainment and pop culture, and/or men’s lifestyle interests
  • Strong skills as an editor, tightening and crafting copy
  • Excellent at producing content with digital-friendly language and search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Versed in using Facebook Insights, Google Analytics, and other audience engagement tools
  • Open to experimenting with content types to create appropriate content for a digital audience
  • Prior experience mentoring junior staffers
