New York Times is looking for an ambitious, creative, digitally sophisticated leader to help shape its Opinion report, focusing on Politics and Culture.
You will partner with the Op-Ed Editor for World and Biz/Tech to ensure we have a wide range of pieces every day and will top edit pieces commissioned by our vertical leaders and others. This person will have excellent news judgment, and take ownership of, and pride in, what we publish. Apply Here.
We’re looking for an editor with a sense of humor and a spine of steel, a confident point of view and an open mind, an appetite for risk and exacting standards for excellence in writing and visual presentation. We’re looking for someone who wants to explore big political questions through the opinion forms of argument and idea interrogation, from voting rights to the future of the US political parties, from free speech to cancel culture, from new ideas and policies that shape society to issues of racism and sexism that shape society as well. And we’re looking for someone who can bring creativity and originality to our culture coverage - not just pop culture and high culture, but also essays about the way we live, what and how we think, and the cultural forces that influence and even guide our lives. Along with this work, we want a leader who has fun doing it.
The Times Opinion team aims to promote the most intelligent and provocative debate across a range of subjects – including politics, global affairs, technology, culture, and business – and is passionate about including a vast array of diverse voices and perspectives. You must have intellectual range and curiosity. You must be a sensitive and deft manager who is deeply committed to advancing a workplace and culture that is inclusive, open and fair. Experience managing a multi-layered team of journalists is a must.
Responsibilities include:
-
Working with the vertical editors for politics and culture to commission and edit smart, forward-thinking Op-Eds, from experts, policymakers, journalists and others, that advance the debate and anticipate and react to news.
-
Continually assessing and calibrating the guest essays and other journalism Opinion publishes, considering news value, the range and diversity of writers and the tension between productivity versus impact and influence.
-
Working with vertical editors to define the vision, audience and priorities for Times Opinion’s culture and politics coverage.
-
Developing a network of outside writers, including the most prominent people on these beats, while cultivating new voices on the biggest news and ideas.
-
Finding fresh angles into the stories most on readers’ minds, about which they are most curious.
-
Working with the managing editor on scheduling and prioritizing the research, copy editing and production workflow.
-
Managing vertical editors and other editors as their coach and advocate.
-
Reading, reviewing, and promptly responding to unsolicited submissions.
Experience and qualifications:
-
At least five years of editing experience.
-
At least three years of managing a team of journalists.
-
Experience covering U.S. culture and politics preferred.
-
Please include links to a few of your published pieces in your cover letter.
