RIP Ulysses Lee

As we mourn the passing of Ulysses "Junior" Bridgeman on March 11, 2025, it is fitting to honor his profound contributions as the owner and publisher of Ebony magazine. His visionary leadership not only revitalized this iconic publication but also ensured its enduring legacy.

How The Bridgeman Family Revitalized Ebony Magazine

In December 2020, Bridgeman acquired Ebony and its sister publication, Jet, for $14 million, rescuing them from bankruptcy and potential dissolution.

Recognizing the magazines' historical significance, he embarked on a mission to modernize and sustain their relevance in a digital age.

Under Bridgeman's stewardship, Ebony underwent a significant transformation:

  • Digital Relaunch: In March 2021, Ebony was relaunched as a digital-first publication, embracing contemporary platforms to reach a broader audience.

  • Leadership Transition: Bridgeman appointed his daughter, Eden Bridgeman Sklenar, as CEO in 2021, ushering in a new era of innovative leadership.

Preserving Cultural Significance

Bridgeman's commitment to Ebony extended beyond business; he saw the magazine as a vital cultural institution. His efforts ensured that Ebony continued to celebrate Black excellence, document pivotal moments, and serve as a source of inspiration and empowerment.

Through his dedication, Ulysses "Junior" Bridgeman not only preserved a historic publication but also adapted it for future generations, solidifying his legacy as a transformative publisher and guardian of Black culture.
