Stylists Suite News - October 24th Edition

Freelancing is unpredictable, but your strategy doesn’t have to be. If you’re ready to level up, you’re in the right place — we’re just getting started.

Hey, it’s Darralynn Hutson, founder of Stylists Suite. Freelancing in real life: I just invoiced Sheen Magazine for my NYFW article… and had to tell a brand their dress didn’t make the cut. Highs, lows, repeat.

This week, Stylists Suite goes behind a paywall. All the editor intel, tips, and strategies you’ve been following? Now they’re curated to actually help you level up your media career.

Freelance life is messy, but your strategy doesn’t have to be. Let’s make moves that matter.

EDITORS ON THE HUNT

With the close of October, the days will continue to grow shorter, and autumn will begin to settle in. Still, the drive and hustle of one's career and aspirations will remain, along with opportunities and celebrations.

Eater Chicago just updated their submission form on October 10th.

If you didn’t know, Eater Chicago is a local food site that reports on restaurants and bars, dining and dining trends, food pop-ups and food trucks, and the business of restaurants throughout the metro area. It is part of the Eater network and under the Vox Media umbrella.

Eater Chicago is inviting freelance writers to pitch story ideas that capture the region's vibrant dining scene. They encourage freelancers to pitch ideas and work with editors to refine them.

How to Pitch: All pitches should include a subject matter with a clear angle (Ask yourself: What is the headline here?) and why the story is relevant to the dining scene in Chicago or beyond Chicago — in other words, “Why should readers care?”

Send pitches to chicago@eater.com. Please include the word “Pitch” in the email subject line.

BuzzFeed's Head of Tasty Editorial Needs Spicy Dining Stories

Ross Yoder, Buzzfeed’s Head of Tasty Editorial, posted earlier this year, but we wanted to revisit it.

This year, I'm starting a new chapter with BuzzFeed, Inc. as Head of Tasty Editorial. As thrilled as I am to help guide this new endeavor for the brand, I’m even MORE excited about finding new talent to collaborate with. Are you a food- or cooking-obsessed freelance writer looking for work?

I’m looking for freelance food writers to contribute evergreen and timely stories on home cooking and trending food & dining moments — all with an approachable, down-to-earth POV. At Tasty, we meet home cooks and food enthusiasts where they are, so my mission is to produce content that appeals to the food-loving masses…regardless of how much experience they have or what their checking account balance looks like.

Ideally, I’m seeking repeat contributors to write articles on a regular basis, which will be a mix of pitches and assignments.

If this sounds like you, with your idea(s) and/or 2–3 links to recent writing samples. (Apologies in advance that I may not have the time to respond to every pitch!)

BUSINESS INSIDER LIFESTYLE IS SEEKING NEW PITCHES

Lydia Wang, Editor, posted this week that she’s looking for lifestyle pitches, and I'd love to work with new writers! Lifestyle pieces can speak to love, unconventional travel "hacks," or a unique living situation. Their pay rates start at $240 for stories around 600 words.

There are a few different topics in the lifestyle/food/travel realm on there, but I’d especially love to hear from you if:

• You moved to a new city, state, or country, and your life or lifestyle improved (or didn’t!)

• You have a unique living situation/lifestyle that works well for you (kind of broad, I know — but you’ll find some examples on my form!)

If your story sounds like a fit or if I have any further questions, I'll be in touch to set up a quick phone call! Due to the sheer volume of pitches our team receives, I may not be able to respond to every pitch — if you don't hear back from me in three weeks, you can assume we're passing at this time.
