This role oversees the close of the print magazine, collaborating with partners across the institution to make each issue a vibrant, rewarding experience for readers and a smooth-running operation for staff. The A-issue editor knows what each department needs to do its best work and advocates for those needs effectively. The ideal candidate has a gift for solving problems and imposing order, strong journalistic instincts, and a deep commitment to The New Yorkerās standards of rigor, fairness, and excellence. This role reports to the managing editor.
Responsibilities
Oversee issue close
- Create and enforce the weekly closing schedule, determining closing timelines in conjunction with story teams, senior leadership, and others
- Insure departments are coordinated and on track to meet printer and publication deadlines
- Communicate lineup and schedules to internal and external partners as needed
- Optimize print closing process, in conjunction with managing editor and department heads, conducting post-mortems and refining workflows as needed
Oversee book geometry
- Select and manage the placement of visual elements, in compliance with style guidelines
- Optimize story layouts for fit and overall efficiency and pacing
- Communicate issue map changes to internal and external production partners
Review issue material for integrity and cohesion
- Read A-issue pieces, flagging questions, echoes, imbalances, etc.
- Assemble book mockup of every issue and review with senior leadership and special issue editors, adjudicating conflicts and implementing changes where appropriate
- Monitor and optimize display copy in conjunction with story editors and display editors
- Review print advertisements for sensitive adjacencies and adherence to industry rules
- Approve home-page and promotional lineups, in conjunction with web partners
Support the managing editor by acting as proxy and advising on various ongoing matters as needed, including but not limited to:
- Long-term editorial programming and planning
- Corrections and updates to published pieces
- Staffing and performance
- Editorial operations (systems, structures, policies)
- Initiatives across platforms, including multimedia projects, consumer products, and branding
Skills and Qualifications
- At least five years of experience working in publishing
- Extensive knowledge of The New Yorker and how it fits into the media landscape
- Exceptional editorial judgment and attention to detail, and the ability to manage staff and projects under tight deadlines
- Willingness to work some late nights, weekends, and holidays
