Vox is hiring a health and science reporter to join our team. This person should be passionate and knowledgeable about their subject area and approach their job with a sense of purpose. Vox is looking for a versatile reporter who can pick up a range of health and science assignments, including stories about the diverse impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Strong candidates will write about science in an approachable and helpful way. They will see stories hidden in plain sight and have a knack for illuminating new findings and sparking curiosity. They’re open to being surprised by what reporting reveals and think deeply about the intellectual and philosophical debates that shape their beat.

This reporter will publish distinctive, evidence-based work about the most important debates, moments, and mysteries on the health and science beat. They will also report breaking news and write short posts when the moment calls for immediate expertise.

Some distinctive stories from our health and science reporters include an explainer about the limits of nutritional science, a reported essay about the importance of intellectual humility, and a longform story about the mental health of doctors during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Experience covering one or more of the following areas is a plus:

• mental health
• global health
• misinformation and misconceptions in science and medicine
• science and health policy
• health and justice, including race, gender, class, and equity

What you'll do:

• Cover your beat through an explanatory lens by breaking down complicated stories in a clear, creative, and compelling way for the general interest reader.
• Write stories about intersections between science and society that elevate underrepresented voices and communities.
• Interview experts for high-level insights while also keeping people at the center of your reporting.
• Work collaboratively with other writers on the science team, as well as Vox’s visuals, podcast, video, and television teams.

• Curiosity and knowledge about health and science
• A passion for digging into the details
• A knack for uncovering key insights in messy or complex debates, and finding the best frame or format for each story
