Telling Stories Writing Contest is a collaboration between African Voices Magazine and Girls Read to Write LLC.

If you are a Young Lady of Color between the age of 8-18, we want to see your best Flash Fiction and short stories.

Before you submit, please read and follow our Guidelines.

Submission Period : May 5, 2021-June 30, 2021

Guidelines

How much does it costs to enter contest?

$5.00 per Submission

Who is eligible to submit their stories?

Young Ladies of Color ages 8-18

What Genres can one submit?

We accept any genre (Adventure, Sci Fi, Horror, Contemporary, Historical Fiction, etc.)

Which category should I submit to?

Young Ladies ages 8-12: Flash Fiction

Young Ladies ages 13-18 Fiction

Is there a Theme?

There is no theme for this contest

How long should my story be?

Flash Fiction: No more than 100 words

Fiction: between 500-1,500 words

How many stories can I submit?

Flash Fiction: only (1) submission with up to (3) stories

Fiction: only (1) submission with (1) story

What else must I submit besides my story/stories?

Please send us a Selfie. NO Filters (we want to see the real you!)

And please send us a short 3-5 line 1st Person Bio about yourself

Will there be a cash prizes or any other prizes?

Yes. There will be (6) winners chosen by Judges in the professional literary community.

We do not accept stories that contains profanity or inappropriate language.

Please no cultural, racial, gender-orientated bias shall be included in the stories unless its addressing the situation in an intellectual manner. A story that is deemed racist or cultural or gender-orientated insensitive will not be considered for the contest.

About Girls Read to Write

We believe if one reads widely and writes, this is the portal to help guide self-expression. We connect reading and creative writing with our book/writing club and workshops. We also spread the joy of reading with our book giveaways and further educate our young ladies about the literary world with author interviews and special articles on our From Our Book shelf blog.

Girls Read to Write started as a writing and book club inspired by Founder Sandra Proto’s eight-year-old daughter and classmates when they formed a “club” during recess. One of the club’s activities that the girls would do were to write stories together. As a writer and avid reader, Sandra Proto thought it was great that the girls had an interest in writing and she always wanted to start a book club for kids. So, with her two daughters and their friends, Sandra Proto developed Girls Read to Write in May of 2015 and held our first meeting in July of the same year.
