Freelance Opportunities for Freelancers Like Me - Week of August 9, 2024
Hi, Darralynn! Thanks very much for thinking of Cosmo. My advice is to try one of my colleagues on the mag’s lifestyle team (masthead here), as the below proposal falls a little more within their purview. Wishing you the best with the piece!

Tamara Fuentes Entertainment Editor @tamara_fuentes: Hi everyone! I’ve been getting a lot of pitches for @Cosmopolitan recently and we don’t really have public guidelines for them, so I thought it might be good to make a little thread to give more insight to the pitching process (at least for me. I don’t speak for other editors):
1. Please don’t pitch me via DMs, social media, or my personal email address. You can send pitches to: tfuentes@hearst.com.
This also goes for any PR emails or if you’re trying to have me review something of yours like a book, movie, or album.
2. Check the website to make sure the idea hasn’t been done before. This has been a bigger problem recently and it really sucks to say no to an idea you’re excited about because it’s already on the site. I would suggest Googling while using “site:http://cosmopolitan.com” w/o “”.
3. We’re mainly looking for opinion pieces, interesting interviews, introspective pieces, or special features for our entertainment section.
Unfortunately, we are not looking for listicles or reviews at this time.
4. Please be mindful about timing. I know not everyone gets screeners or things ahead of time, but I also cannot accept a pitch for something that has aired or released a month ago. An exception would be if it’s a special anniversary piece for something.
5. Have fun with it! We’re Cosmo! We love to hear fun and wacky ideas! If you’re having fun, then it really helps make a piece pop! If you have any questions, you can always email me (tfuentes@hearst.com) and I’ll be more than happy to answer!
My inbox can get a bit full sometimes, so it might take me a day or two to get back to you.
Sarah Gibbens @Sarah_Gibbens:...I'm still accepting pitches. You can find my email in my bio [sarah.gibbens@natgeo.com], and I'm happy to answer any questions there as well. Generally, I'm always on the lookout for smart, timely science stories. Ideally, a story has a surprising takeaway or tangible impact on readers and makes complex topics feel accessible. At this particular moment, I'm keeping an eye out for interesting takes on summer heat.
Sask Dispatch @SaskDispatch: Call for pitches! Looking specifically for pitches re: the prov. election in Oct, but also open to pitches on arts/culture, the environment, harm reduction, etc. Details for pitches can be found here: https://saskdispatch.
["The Sask Dispatch publishes articles about Saskatchewan on a range of topics, including provincial and municipal elections, grassroots activism, Indigenous rights, arts and culture, economic justice, ecology, gender equity, harm reduction, and more...$100 – Profiles, short essays, and reviews (generally <1,000 words); $200 – Feature stories (generally 1,000-1,500 words), photo essays; $300 – Research-based articles and investigative reportage with extensive primary research (generally 1,500-2,000 words)"] [The pitch deadline for prov. election pieces is August 15.
