Andréa Butler, Former Editor-in-Chief/Publisher of Sesi Magazine
Andréa Butler is an entrepreneurial writer, editor, publisher, and paid public speaker who reps hard for the culture, especially when it comes to Black teen girls. Prior to launching Sesi, the only teen magazine for Black girls on the newsstand, Andréa worked as a high school English teacher for five years, and after that, a senior editor at LivingSocial.
Andréa holds a B.A. in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an M.A. in Magazine Journalism from Kent State University.
"As a teenager in the '90s, I fell hard for magazines — having what my mom called “an intense obsession” (it was nearly impossible for me to leave a store without buying at least one). But, I got tired of reading magazines I couldn’t relate to — Essence was too old, and I didn’t exactly see myself in the pages of Seventeen, YM, et al. One night, lying on my bedroom floor, flipping through a dozen or so old issues of those other teen mags, a full sentence thought crossed my mind: “If nothing’s changed by the time I’m done with school, I’ll start one myself.”"

About Sesi Magazine:
In the world of Black magazines, something was missing — a Black magazine edited specifically for teens. Then, in 2012, Sesi was launched. The only print magazine for Black teen girls published in the U.S., Sesi is, you read that correctly, print-focused.
Representation matters, and Sesi reps Black girls to the fullest. You, too, deserve a magazine that will always show up for you and be something you can truly relate to — a magazine that doesn’t see Black girls as merely passing fads to throw on a cover once a year or so.
