WIRED Looking For Staff Writer - General Assignment

Technology touches every part of everyday life, and influences many of the most important stories in the world. WIRED seeks a writer who is adept at covering its many facets, from internet culture outbursts to algorithms gone awry to consumer tech breakthroughs.

This role will roam across all of WIRED’s coverage areas, working with editors to identify stories that we’re not covering but should, finding sharp angles, and reporting them out. It’s an opportunity for a news omnivore with impeccable story sense to write across any number of topics, ideally developing mini-beats along the way. You could find yourself interviewing meme creators, dissecting Jeopardy! game theory, or getting deep in the weeds of a 5G rollout. This is not a blogging job; candidates should realistically aim to write 2-3 timely, well-reported stories per week. You’ll have the opportunity to pitch longform features as well, but the primary responsibility will be covering the news.

You should have some experience of covering tech or science, and be excited by the prospect of storytelling across a wide range of formats. You should be adept at identifying the angle everyone else missed. And you should be able to work quickly without cutting journalistic corners. You may also have the opportunity to take part in our podcasts, video series, or live events. Over time, you may develop your own specialized beat.

At WIRED, you’ll be part of a growing and increasingly global newsroom of smart, kind, nerdy, and well-informed colleagues who are always brimming with ideas and eager to help each other out. There will be ample opportunities to learn from editors across business, gear, culture, science, and security desks, as well as to collaborate with reporters on more defined beats.

Pandemic permitting, you can work out of WIRED’s offices in San Francisco, New York, or London, but if you live in the United States or UK outside those cities you can be based remotely.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Pitch, report, and write two to three news-driven stories across WIRED’s coverage areas
  • Collaborate with audio, video, events, and social media teams as needed to develop ways of telling stories on other platforms

Skills and qualifications:

  • Experience as a technology or science journalist with a track record of timely, original reporting
  • A clear, engaging, jargon-free writing style
